Visiting Dubrovnik in winter is usually an invigorating experience but this year the town was surprised by an unusual snowfall and way below-average temperatures. As soon as the the snow melts away and the spring sunshine warms the ancient streets, Dubrovnik has some surprises in store for this year’s visitors.

• Electric scooters will be available starting in April for locals and visitors. The program will ease traffic, protect the environment and allow visitors to explore hideaways throughout the region.

• Star chef Jeffrey Vella (formerly of Gil’s and 360°) has opened a new restaurant, Portrait in the romantic Gundulic Palace. The finest local ingredients are served up with style and flair.

• Visitor limits will make visiting Dubrovnik better for everyone. The city administration is putting in place a system of camera counters intended to limit visitors to the town center to no more than 8000 at once. With a circumference of a little over a mile, the Old Town just cannot handle the 10,000 visitors that sometime crowd the streets.

• New flights will make it easier and cheaper to reach Dubrovnik. Alitalia will fly Rome to Dubrovnik twice weekly from 23 July to 10 September and Flybe will launch twice weekly flights from London Southend to Dubrovnik on 16 May, lasting to 30 September.
