At least, that&#8217;s my interpretation of the technical jargon that follows.<\/p><div id=\"croat-3711004689\" class=\"croat-content croat-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4787844071747328\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4787844071747328\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"7926307719\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>This from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lloydslist.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lloyd&#8217;s List:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>AS Croatia prepares to enter the European Union, strategic reforms and<br \/>\nstructural change are necessary if the country&#8217;s ferry operators are to<br \/>\ncompete effectively, writes Sandra Speares.<\/p>\n<p>In a paper presented in the Maritime Policy and Management journal, Heidi<br \/>\nCottam, Michael Roe and Jonathan Challacombe of Plymouth University&#8217;s centre<br \/>\nof international shipping and logistics say that Croatian fleets are<br \/>\nsuffering from &#8220;obsolete vessels with inferior technology, operating<br \/>\nregional networks with point-to-point routings instead of global service<br \/>\nactivity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>According to the paper, EU enlargement &#8220;has changed the meaning of the<br \/>\nAdriatic as a traffic corridor for tourism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, Croatian maritime transport systems must be considered in relation<br \/>\nto the interconnectivity of regional transit networks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The paper urges Croatia to seek to improve the standard of passenger<br \/>\ntransport to that of the Single European Transport Policy.<\/p>\n<p>The paper also advocates a return to the cruise industry by Croatian<br \/>\nshipping companies, initially by means of state concessions, but in the<br \/>\nlonger term through private funding and financing initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>The authors suggest that &#8220;Croatian operators should develop a modest fleet<br \/>\nof contemporary cruise liners on the Adriatic, to niche markets that are not<br \/>\nin direct competition with the leading operators&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development agreed a ?26.5m<br \/>\n($35.5m) loan to modernise the port of Dubrovnik at the beginning of 2005,<br \/>\nto ensure that the port would be able to accommodate three 300 m ships at<br \/>\none time, although the authors say that more investment is needed to improve<br \/>\nCroatia&#8217;s traffic network.<\/p>\n<p>While Croatia has the chance to move back into the international cruise<br \/>\nmarket, the paper says, capital remains in short supply, as is the case with<br \/>\nthe short sea ferry fleet where investment has been limited.<\/p>\n<p>It recommends that short sea ferries &#8220;should now be directed towards the<br \/>\ninternational cross-trades with increased emphasis on geographical and<br \/>\nproduct niches&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Government support, the paper says, will be needed to &#8220;overcome the conflict<br \/>\nbetween the interests of the shipping and tourism industries and that of the<br \/>\nnational citizen&#8221;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><div id=\"croat-2043435291\" class=\"croat-below-post croat-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4787844071747328\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4787844071747328\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"7926307719\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Listen up, Jadrolinija&#8211;they&#8217;re talking to you!
