Just sorting through all the Croatia travel information can be like a second job. Who has time to figure it all out? No matter how diligent the preparation, there are a few common mistakes I see all the time in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Consultation.html\">Croatia travel consulting\u00c2\u00a0<\/a>and the feedback I receive. Like all countries, Croatia has particularities and eccentricities that savvy travellers need to be aware of. Don&#8217;t make the following mistakes and you&#8217;ll be fine!<\/p><div id=\"croat-3706351137\" class=\"croat-content croat-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4787844071747328\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4787844071747328\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"7926307719\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00c2\u00a0Hit and run itinerary<\/h4>\n<p>Occasionally someone will approach me for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Consultation.html\">consultation<\/a> with a request like &#8220;I&#8217;d like to visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Istria\/Istria.htm\">Istria<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Heritage_Sites\/Plitvice.htm\">Plitvice Lakes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/dubrovnik_index.htm\">Dubrovnik<\/a> with a stop at an island or two. I have a week&#8221;. Um, no. At 56,538 sq km Croatia is not gigantic but the coast is loooong. From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Istria\/Umag.htm\">Umag<\/a> in northern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Istria\/Istria.htm\">Istria<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/dubrovnik_index.htm\">Dubrovnik<\/a> near Croatia&#8217;s southern tip is 725km or a good eight hour drive, without breaks. And that&#8217;s not even counting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Islands.htm\">islands<\/a>, some of which are a good three hours by ferry from the coast.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1469\" style=\"width: 529px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Maps\/CroatiaMaps.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1469\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1469\" src=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/relief.jpg\" alt=\"Travel planning starts with a good map!\" width=\"519\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/relief.jpg 519w, https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/relief-285x300.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Travel planning starts with a good map!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>My advice is to be less ambitious. Slow down! It&#8217;s not a race! You can&#8217;t see everything in this marvellous country and you shouldn&#8217;t try. For a short stay, it&#8217;s best to choose one region such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Istria\/Istria.htm\">Istria<\/a> or southern Dalmatia and visit it in depth. Consider your flight plans. If you&#8217;re arriving and departing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Zagreb_region\/zagreb.htm\">Zagreb<\/a>, nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Istria\/Istria.htm\">Istria<\/a> is the easiest region to visit. If you can fly into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/central%20dalmatia\/Split.htm\">Split<\/a> and out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/dubrovnik_index.htm\">Dubrovnik<\/a>, there&#8217;s plenty of time to experience the best of Dalmatia even if you only have\u00c2\u00a0 week. In fact, it&#8217;s best to check ferry routes at the earliest possible moment in the trip-planning process. Do not assume that there &#8220;must be&#8221; a ferry between two spots. Every inhabited island has a <strong>car ferry<\/strong> connection to the coast that runs daily all year round but the car ferry ports may not be accessible by public transport.<\/p>\n<p>Where tourists get into trouble is assuming that anyplace on the coast has a ferry connection to any island and that all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Islands.htm\">islands<\/a> are connected by ferry. In fact <strong>no<\/strong> islands are connected by car ferries. Passenger ferries do connect the most popular islands&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/central%20dalmatia\/Brac.htm\">Brac<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Hvar\/Hvar.htm\">Hvar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/korcula.htm\">Korcula<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Mljet.htm\">Mljet<\/a>&#8211;but only from mid-April to mid-October. Islands in the north of Croatia such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Kvarner\/Losinj.htm\">Losinj<\/a> have no connections whatsoever to islands in the south. Crazy, I know.<\/p>\n<p>Croatia Traveller&#8217;s<strong> dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Transport\/FerriesinCroatia.htm\">ferries<\/a> page <\/strong>takes you through all the Croatian ferry companies and links to all the ferry timetables in southern Dalmatia. Ferry schedules change little from year to year in case you&#8217;re already planning for next year&#8217;s holiday. Sometimes a different company may pick up a passenger ferry route or the start and finish dates change slightly for seasonal ferries.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Unsuitable Accommodation<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dubrovnik-stairs-e1581948479647.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2735 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dubrovnik-stairs-e1581956423131.jpg\" alt=\"Stepped street in Dubrovnik\" width=\"550\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dubrovnik-stairs-e1581956423131.jpg 550w, https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dubrovnik-stairs-e1581956423131-300x255.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The standard of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/accommodation.htm\">accommodation in Croatia<\/a> is high. From five-star hotels to humble guesthouses you can count on clean, air-conditioned rooms and friendly hosts. Nevertheless there are a few particularities to keep in mind, especially for visitors with mobility issues. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/PrivateAccommodation.htm\">Staying in private accommodation<\/a> is certainly an attractive option all along the coast but note that your lovely apartment will be in a building <strong>without an elevator<\/strong>. The good news is that most buildings will not reach higher than two or three storeys and, if notified in advance, owners will usually help you negotiate the stairs with luggage.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of stairs, there may also be stairs or a hill to get to an apartment in the center of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/dubrovnik_index.htm\">Dubrovnik<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/hvar_town.htm\">Hvar town<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/korcula.htm\">Korcula town<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/central%20dalmatia\/Split.htm\">Split<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Istria\/rovinj.htm\">Rovinj<\/a> or other ancient towns. People who lived centuries ago seemed to feel safer surrounded by hills. These days the hills have been turned into neighbourhoods for locals and tourists. Accessibility is never a problem in larger hotels where there are elevators and personnel on site to assist with luggage.<\/p>\n<p>I advise reading the verified reviews on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/?aid=322276\">booking.com<\/a> carefully and, if necessary, sending a message to the owner.<\/p>\n<p>Also know that private accommodation owners <strong>never<\/strong> take credit cards. Payment is always cash only, preferably in local currency although euros, dollars and pounds may also be accepted.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Wasting Money<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dubrovnik-restaurant-e1581949864725.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2736\" src=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dubrovnik-restaurant-e1581949864725.jpg\" alt=\"Dubrovnik side street\" width=\"550\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Croatia provides good value for money and can be especially good value off-season when accommodation prices start dropping. It can be a cheap country to visit as long as you pay attention to the money flow and avoid obvious tourist traps. And where there are tourists, there are traps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/dubrovnik-overtourism\/\">Overtouristed Dubrovnik<\/a> is a minefield of tricks and traps. First, avoid any <strong>restaurant<\/strong> with touts outside imploring you to enter. You can be sure that locals won&#8217;t go near the place. There are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/BestRestaurants.html\">few fantastic Dubrovnik restaurants\u00c2\u00a0<\/a>but many more that are disappointing and overpriced, particularly on the crowded side streets. Eat where the locals eat which would be about as far from the Old Town as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Also, think twice about paying for a <strong>walking tour<\/strong>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Zagreb_region\/zagreb.htm\">Zagreb<\/a>, the tourist office has free illustrated brochures with detailed walking tours. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/central%20dalmatia\/Split.htm\">Split<\/a> there are placards throughout the town explaining the sights. Dubrovnik&#8217;s old town is easily walkable and this article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/Dubrovnik_sights.htm\">Dubrovnik&#8217;s sights<\/a> tells you everything you need to know. There&#8217;s no need to follow the throngs in a Game of Thrones tour when you can follow your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/game-of-thrones.html\">self-guided Game of Thrones tour <\/a>in Dubrovnik.<\/p>\n<p>To save on sightseeing, I recommend the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dubrovnikcard.com\/\">Dubrovnik Card\u00c2\u00a0<\/a>at least for a day. It costs 225Kn but includes<a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/Walls.htm\"> Dubrovnik&#8217;s walls<\/a> which\u00c2\u00a0 cost 200Kn on its own, the Rector&#8217;s Palace which costs 80Kn, public transport, a good selection of Dubrovnik&#8217;s sights and discounts in shops and restaurants.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Zagreb_region\/zagreb.htm\"> Zagreb<\/a> also sells a <a href=\"http:\/\/zagrebcard.com\/\">Zagreb card<\/a> that&#8217;s good value if your plan includes multiple museums.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Heritage_Sites\/Plitvice.htm\">Plitvice Lakes<\/a> is another tourist hotspot that can be unnecessarily expensive. A guided walking tour is largely superfluous here as the trails are well-signposted. You can follow a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Heritage_Sites\/PlitviceSightseeing.htm\">self-guided Plitvice walk here<\/a>. Notice that Plitvice has a reduced-price admission after 4pm which cuts the ticket price by 50%. It&#8217;s also the best time to visit the lakes. Pack a picnic lunch and water to save both time and money.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/National%20Parks\/Krka.htm\">Krka Waterfalls\u00c2\u00a0 <\/a>also has a reduced price admission after 4pm. Take advantage of it!<\/p>\n<p>To save money on ferries, try to travel as a passenger on a car ferry rather than taking a fast passenger ferry. Car ferries are much cheaper than a passenger ferries unless you&#8217;re taking a car. Although car ferries are slower there&#8217;s more space to walk around including on an outdoor deck.<\/p>\n<p>The sun and sea are free! <a href=\"http:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Money\/Costs.htm\">See more on costs.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Unnecessary Car Rental<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/split-busstation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2737\" src=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/split-busstation.jpg\" alt=\"Split bus station\" width=\"557\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/split-busstation.jpg 557w, https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/split-busstation-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/CarRental.htm\">Renting a car<\/a> in Croatia can save some time on crowded itineraries, especially off-season when passenger ferries are sparse. But the public transport system in Croatia is excellent. Buses link all major towns and in summer there&#8217;s a far wider choice of passenger ferries to the islands than car ferries. Queuing up for a car ferry in summer can chew up a lot of time. Plus parking is expensive and most town centres are pedestrian only.\u00c2\u00a0 Travelling via public transport is slower, yes, but more convivial. With only a few days to visit an island however, you&#8217;ll need wheels. See more on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/transport.htm\">getting around Croatia.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Morning visits to beat the crowds<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dubrovnik-crowds-e1581951404239.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2738\" src=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/dubrovnik-crowds-e1581951404239.jpg\" alt=\"Dubrovnik Stradun\" width=\"550\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a common misconception that you can beat the crowds by arriving early. Not necessarily unless you arrive <strong>very <\/strong>early. The two most crowded spots in Croatia are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Heritage_Sites\/Plitvice.htm\">Plitvice Lakes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/dubrovnik_index.htm\">Dubrovnik<\/a>. In both places, crowds begin arriving on tour buses around 9am and don&#8217;t let up until mid-afternoon. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Heritage_Sites\/Plitvice.htm\">Plitvice Lakes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/National%20Parks\/Krka.htm\">Krka National Park<\/a> offer a reduced admission after 4pm in order to distribute crowds more evenly. In Dubrovnik, most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/cruise-schedule.html\">cruise ships<\/a> arrive between 7 and 9am and again at 2pm. By late afternoon crowds have thinned out. So either get up at the crack of dawn or sleep in and take advantage of the long summer days for late-afternoon sightseeing.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Planning around &#8220;must see&#8221; destinations<\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_2739\" style=\"width: 567px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/sibenik550.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2739\" class=\"wp-image-2739 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/sibenik550.jpg\" alt=\"Sibenik\" width=\"557\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/sibenik550.jpg 557w, https:\/\/croatiatraveller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/sibenik550-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sibenik main square<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There are no musts! And what about the joy of discovery? The best moments in travel are the least planned. The fact is that the famous places&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Dubrovnik\/dubrovnik_index.htm\">Dubrovnik<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Heritage_Sites\/Plitvice.htm\">Plitvice<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/central%20dalmatia\/Bisevo.htm\">Blue Grotto<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/National%20Parks\/Krka.htm\">Krka<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/central%20dalmatia\/Split.htm\">Split<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Hvar\/Hvar.htm\">Hvar,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/korcula\/KorculaIsland.htm\">Korcula<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/central%20dalmatia\/Brac.htm\">Brac<\/a>&#8211;are heavily touristed especially between June and September.<\/p>\n<p>Why not select one or two hotspots and then head off the beaten track? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/central%20dalmatia\/Vis%20Island.htm\">Vis island<\/a> is a tranquil island to visit in southern Dalmatia and northern Croatian islands such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Zadar\/Pag.htm\">Pag<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Kvarner\/Cres.htm\">Cres<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Kvarner\/Losinj.htm\">Losin<\/a>j have plenty of elbow room even in summer. Veer away from the crowds and take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/Zadar\/Zadar.htm\">Zadar<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/central%20dalmatia\/Sibenik.htm\">Sibenik<\/a> in southern Dalmatia. No one needs a jacket and tie or evening wear. Major towns have public facilities should laundry become necessary. Most of Croatia&#8217;s towns and villages were built in centuries past when people were used to walking a lot in sturdy shoes.
