Zagreb: the ski resort?

Croatia has produced a pretty good female skier in Janica Kostelic who won a record number of gold medals in the 2002 Olympics. Yet most people think of Croatia more as a summery kind of place rather than a winter destination. That’s about to change. Mount Sljeme, just outside Zagreb will play host to a women’s World Cup slalom on the evening of Jan. 4. About 70 of the world’s best female skiers will compete on these slopes just 30 minutes from the center of Zagreb. The race is the only one on the circuit that is held so close to a national capital.
