Behind Dubrovnik’s postcard-perfect Old Town looms the 412m Srdj hill. You can just imagine the views over the Adriatic. For decades there was a cable car that ferried tourists from the Ploce neighbourhood to the top. It was enormously successful, transporting up to 150,000 tourists a year. It all ended during the “Homeland War” from 1991 to 1995 which left the apparatus in ruins.
For years, residents spoke wistfully of the cableway, wondering if and when someone would come up with the money to rebuild it. Well, it’s finally happened. The Atlas company has drummed up financing and work is about to start on rebuilding this outstanding tourist attraction.
And not just rebuilding but improving it! Plans are afoot to add a glassed-in lounge at the top so visitors can enjoy a refreshment while admiring the view. And when can visitors avail themselves of this treat? Not next year, but probably around 2010 if all goes well.
