Trogir

June 30th 2008

It is a jewel of a town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site but Trogir was unbelievably crowded, even in mid-June. Pleasure boats crowded the Trogir quay; there were tour groups, gulet-cruising groups and hordes of other camera-clickers. The celebrated cathedral has been fully restored and maybe even over-restored. Parts of the facade looked just too new. I was also surprised at the 15HRK fee to enter but shouldn’t have been; it’s a bargain at twice the price. The large parking lot outside the Old Town was nearly full even though parking is a steep 15HRK/hour, the most expensive on the coast.

I always enjoy visiting Split, the Adriatic’s most vibrant city. The town is all hustle and bustle even as the seaside Promenade makes for a relaxing stroll.

Villa Pape, Trogir

June 30th 2008

At first, I thought it would be a good idea to stay in central Trogir. I’m so glad I didn’t. Although the architecture of this World Heritage Site is wonderful, it’s not exactly a hidden treasure. Wow, was it busy! So, I stayed in Ciovo, a beach resort just outside the Old Town, and sampled the hospitality of Ira and Boris Rakic who run Villa Pape.

Croatia’s Marinas, Spas & Hotels: Bigger and Bigger

December 5th 2007

Croatia seems to be moving in two directions at once. Ecotourism is the new direction, said National Tourist Board director, Nico Bulic. Tell that to the ever-expanding girth (and price) of Croatia hotels, many of which are adding vast spas and wellness centres. Spa resort hotels are all the rage now as Croatia aims to expand the tourist season into and through the winter. The Grand Hotel Adriatic in Opatija is the most recent addition to an impressive line-up of wellness centres that includes the Dubrovnik Palace and Le Meridien Lav near Split.

The Atrium: A new five-star hotel in Split

August 21st 2007

It took a while but Split finally has a brand-new five-star hotel only steps from the celebrated “Diocletian’s Palace” and Split’s historical town centre. For years Split has suffered from a shortage of decent accommodation, let alone luxury accommodation but that era is past. The Hotel Atrium is primarily designed for business travellers (FREE wireless access from every room!) but leisure travellers will also find a lot to love. Such as, the indoor swimming pool, wellness centre, jacuzzi, sauna, on-site restaurant and its excellent location. The hotel is so comfy it just might encourage you to stick around Split for a while before running off to the islands. Find out more about Split accommodation.
