Within a few days of each other, Jadrolinija, Croatia’s national ferry company and Croatian Railways announced the immediate ban on smoking in all public areas.

Jadrolinija had previously confined smokers to the bar-lounge area but now only the outside deck is available for smoking.

Croatian Railways had also had limits on smoking areas but now there will be no smoking anywhere, including the restaurant area. Plus fines for defying the ban can reach 1000 kuna, a hefty price to pay for indulging your nicotine habit.

The two transport companies acted several months in advance of a new Croatian law banning smoking in all public indoor spaces.

Train-travellers in Europe can now rumble through Croatia. And they can do it cheaper. Eurail has just announced that Croatia and Slovenia have just been added to its Global pass. Starting in 2008, the Global pass will now include these two countries, bringing the total covered by the pass to 20.

Good news for travellers “doing” the Balkans this summer. As of April 6, there will be a night train from Sarajevo to Zagreb. Day trains have been in operation for years but the advantage of night trains is that you don’t lose a day’s travel time in getting from one place to another. Of course train buffs (and I’m one of them) will claim that at least half the pleasure is getting there. Maybe. But it’s nice to have a choice.  See more on getting to Zagreb and trains to Croatia.

Eurail has announced that it is offering a Croatia pass! For ‘only’ $111 you can travel up to eight consecutive or non-consecutive days within Croatia within a month. This announcement comes only a month or so after the announcement that Croatia would be added to the Eurail multi-country pass.

It sounds good and who can complain? Still, train travel within Croatia is relatively cheap (you can go from Zagreb to Split and back for about half the cost of this pass) and the train network is relatively limited.
So take a look at a map of Croatia’s railway system and think about how you’ll be travelling Croatia by train before ordering your Eurail pass.

From the beginning of next year holidaymakers who want to travel across Europe by rail will have several new options with new passes from Eurail. From January 1st 2007 passes covering rail travel in Croatia, Ireland, Italy and Portugal will be available, as well as Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg). Additionally, Eurail will also have two new country combinations – Austria and Hungary or Italy and Spain from next year. “Eurail is adapting its pass range to match the way many overseas visitors travel today,” said René de Groot, Eurail managing director. “With holidays abroad getting shorter and more frequent, many travellers have less time for extended journeys throughout Europe.” There are now 18 countries covered by Eurail passes.
