No Pal PayPal

What’s the story with PayPal anyway? Why have they blacklisted Croatia? It’s unbelievable that you can send and receive PayPal payments from a whole variety of unsavoury countries while Croatia is on the fecal roster along with Serbia & Montenegro, Bosnia and all other countries of former Yugoslavia except Slovenia. Small businesses in Croatia, particularly little guesthouses have to irritate their clients by demanding expensive SWIFT transfers when a PayPal transfer would be so simple.

Rebuffed in the Balkans

I understand that Croatia emerged from a very bitter period in the 90s and is sensitive about its history but maybe it’s time to put the past behind. I’m talking about the country’s unrelenting hostility to the idea that they are part of the “Balkans”.

Highway Zagreb-Split

The new highway from Zagreb to Split is finally open after many delays and tears. It was Croatia’s largest engineering project drawing even the Prime Minister to speak at its opening. The drive from Zagreb to the coast is now cut to little more than four hours but believe me, the drive is UGLY. It would be hard to find a more unscenic route in the entire country but, I guess that’s not the point.

Distress in Dubrovnik

I just spoke to a good friend of mine in Dubrovnik who informs me that cruise passengers have taken over the town! They’re coming! They’re coming! They’re here! Frankly Dubrovnik is adorable and has a fascinating history but who would want to just run through without staying a few nights at least? The cozy little town center is virtually nose-to-nose with tourists. I say, settle down and stay a while. You don’t “do” Dubrovnik (how I hate that term), you “visit” Dubrovnik. You fall in love with Dubrovnik. You try to ignore the sun-burned hordes trampling the marble streets.
